Chompy Evo.png

Chompy Evo is a two wheel drive grabber and lifter, inspired by BattleBots competitor Claw Viper. It utilises a 4-bar claw design to reach forth and grab opponents before, in principal, lifting and suplexing them. In practice, this proved tricky due to the Lego Power Functions system's lack of power. Chompy first appeared as a two wheel drive Grabber in Lego Wars Second Internation Special in 2021 before its main series debut in Series 2. Chompy Evo debuted at Reading Brick Show in March 2022 ahead of its online return in Lego Wars Series 3.

HISTORY

2021

Chompy originally took part in the Second Lego Wars International Special where it represented Australia due to the likeness of this robot to Australian Spiders kind of if you squint at it. The robot performed above expectations, making it to the Round of 8, originally qualifying against Frenzy before defeating Weld-Dor M by judges decsion. However it was Panic Attack who would take them out in the end, pitting the 'Australian' machine. Though signal issues had plagued the machine, its good performance earned it the number 16 seed going into Series 2.

In Series 2, Chompy would repeat its International Success, once again making the Top 8. In its Heat it faced Plunderbird L, Rusty and a fateful rematch against Panic Attack. Having fixed the reception issues, Chompy was able to push Plunderbird all around before getting a solid grab and pushing them into the pit. The same fate met Rusty in their battle and then onto the final fight of the heat against Panic Attack. With a place in the Round of 16 secure for both robots, this match was seen as bragging rights. It began as the International had ended for Chompy, with Panic Attack getting a good lift in, but after Chomy escaped, the match turned in their favour. With the pit malfunctioning, Chompy went on the offensive and managed to get under Panic Attack at every turn, eventually winning the Judges Decision.

In the Round of 16, Chompy faced Channel favourite Sweepy. Chompy outdrove the shuffling bar throughout, perfectly placing them on the pit before driving to the button and sending them down and out. Chompy progressed to the Round of 8 where they faced Waddledee Too. The angled spinner proved too much for the grabber, splitting the chassis and causing a signal error that sent Chompy into an uncontrolled frenzy before it cutout, with Waddledee Too taking the win.

2022

Chompy underwent an experimental upgrade for Series 3, changing from grabber to a 4-bar grabber and lifter compound weapon based on the designs for BattleBots' Claw Viper. This new design debuted to the public at Reading Brick Show where it didn't perform too well, however, filming for Series 3 had already begun and as such, the experimental grab and lifter remained for the duration.

The new Chompy Evo. first appeared in the second Lego Wars International Special. Its first opponent was fellow Aussie AnnieRUOK, in which they struggled to move around the extended arena freely due to the low forks catching every seem. Despite this, Chompy managed to overturn Annie, immobilising them. In the next round, Chompy did manage to get some lifts on Block of Napalm, even managing to flip it over once. This fight was by far its best performance for the series however, as some of the 'upgrades' worked against the machine going forwards. Chompy defeated BoN and moved on to the Round of 8 once more, this time in a rematch against Weld-Dor M whom it had faced in 2021's International Special. Though Chompy started the aggressor, Weld-Dor came back on the offensive, managing to take off one of Chompy's now exposed wheels before eventually throwing them down the pit.

In its Series 3 heat, Chompy Evo starred as the top seed (7th overall for the series) and faced 23 Red, Mingo, Hypershock and Flashover 360. First up was Flashover, who Chompy managed to grab without issues, and driven around the arena, but the lifter failed to function as intended. Chompy also continued to struggle with arena seems and their front forks but despite all this, Flashover were stranded in the corner when Chompy opened the pit which eventually saw Flashover down and out. Next up was 23 Red who took the front weapon setup to pieces systematically before removing a wheel from Chompy as well. Chompy did however survive to a JD, picking up another point in the process. Next up was a similarly struggling Hypershock who's thermal cutout issues had plagued it throughout the episode. Chompy managed to get a few grabs and attempted lifts in but they were foiled by the lack of power. Chompy won the JD but the fight left a lot to be desired. Chompy's final fight was against Mingo where it picked up another JD win but once again, left a lot to be desired. Despite everything, Chompy scraped just enough points to finish top of the heat and spot in the Round of 32.

Chompy Evo's Ro32 match was against Tin, who Chompy managed to grab hold of Tin without taking damage and hold them in place before having to let go. Chompy then managed to get hold of one side of Tin and slightly lift one of their wheels off of the arena floor, with an attempted escape, Tin ended up over the pit, still held by Chompy who's Claws had locked in place. Tin were now in the pit and out. Chompy faced Emulator in the Round of 16 and was the first time the robot was not driven by Jevan. Jevan and Emulator drove well against the forks of Chompy, knowing the machine well enough to know how to defeat it. In a classic move, Emulator drove around the pit, knowing that Chompy is too wide to do the same. The opponent driver did not know however and ended up with a wheel over the pit - the end of the road for Chompy Evo.
